Art project «Great Deeds»

Маша Львова

I want to be needed,

The best,

To be useful,

To be perfect,

To leave my mark,

To become more and more,

To become great…

But what if I don’t manage to fulfil my potential.

I’ll be left without realising my desires…

I give the world nothing good,

I mean nothing,

I’m no role model…

Shhh… quiet

What if great deeds are not achievements and merits, but the ability to simply be? A series of ceramic objects born on the ocean shore is a radical re-evaluation of this obsessive belief.

Forms that emerged from the flow of the subconscious and the rhythm of the waves challenge the culture of results. Their value lies in the imprint of the moment, in trust in chance, in the honesty of fingerprints, not in perfection. This is an exploration of freedom through rejecting imposed standards of success.

The project is a personal manifesto. Having travelled the path from entrepreneurship to art, the artist offers a different hierarchy: the great deed is slowing down. Contemplation. The valuable skill of being present in the only time that matters — the now.

Each work is a materialised impression of Brazil’s abundant nature: dried flowers washed ashore, the lines of the hills, the generosity of the tropics. Wild and spontaneous textures record life on the island, and through it — a state of inner freedom, trust in life and deep enjoyment of the moment.

Emphasising the process as its core essence, the project asserts: the path matters, not the goal. The ceramics are accompanied by a photo archive — a visual diary of the life of objects born from a dialogue with the ocean.

About the artist

Hi, I’m Masha Lvova

Brazil split my life into before and after.

I learned that bananas grow “upside down”, and learned to simply live in the present without striving for “great deeds”.

In Brazil, on the island of Florianópolis, my creative and philosophical side found its embodiment in art. I took clay in my hands and began to give shape to what I feel. I discovered new ways of expressing my vision of the world.

That is why the works created on the island of Florianópolis in Brazil are united into a single art project — “Great Deeds”.

Artist statement

Trust and let life lead you

The hardest thing is not to admit that you don’t know where to go. The hardest thing is to trust and let life lead you.

My art is about this freedom. About the inner quiet and lightness I found after moving from Moscow to Brazil. These are traces of my path: from a life of constant chasing of success — to the simple joy of being myself and living in the present.

I explore how environment changes us. How letting go of precise plans reveals a person. In ceramics I find the perfect language for this conversation — it is tactile, unpredictable and honest.

For 20 years I created creative concepts for the events industry and hospitality. I am the founder of the wedding studio “Dlya Dvoikh” and “DD Club private events”, creating private events in the most beautiful corners of the planet (the French Riviera and châteaux in France, the deserts of Morocco and Dubai, a grotto in Sorrento and the shores of Lake Como).

But on the island of Florianópolis I took off the “winner’s crown”. Here, having given birth to my third child, I was truly born as an artist.

My studio on the ocean shore is the physical embodiment of this philosophy. Here I work with clay, letting the material dictate the form and the feelings take part in the process. Every trace of the hand is evidence of dialogue, not control.

Through ceramics I explore what happens when you stop proving and start feeling. When value becomes not the perfect result, but the honesty of the process and the courage to be yourself.

Exhibitions

Cumbaza

This is my art residency in the Amazon in Peru, learning the way of life and craft techniques from the local indigenous people. To live in a hut of clay and palm leaves, dig clay with a machete and fire works in a bonfire — for this I am ready to be an artist. An exhibition of works for the locals on the bank of a river from the Amazon basin — could I ever have imagined that this is exactly how my first solo exhibition would look.

Sitting on the bank of the Cumbaza river, I watched the flow of the water and of my thoughts. A turbulent current among stones and jungle. You can’t give the command “Raise the sails” because you can’t even launch the boat. The river is not navigable. But sooner or later the tributary will flow into the Amazon, and the Amazon into the ocean.

I compared this to the flow of life. Every idea and action has its own time and nature. Difficulties and mistakes, like the stones in the river, are necessary and part of the path.

My works created in Peru, in the village of San Roque, are about accepting and acknowledging one’s experience and imperfection, removing the masks imposed by society, expanding one’s possibilities and going beyond four walls. Unpredictability and acceptance of the result are part of the practice of understanding meaning “on the way”. What matters is not the result, but the process.

This time I explore the manifestation of the human being through pigments found on the roads of the Peruvian jungle. Masks of connection with nature. Yet another role, or a true idyll?
